C. L. Wyrick
The conceptual paintings of C.L. Wyrick derive from the crisis of context in our increasingly rudderless, image-based media society. In lush, painterly oils and watercolors, Wyrick plays with the way pictures are used to sell, explain, define and exploit products and people in the global marketplace. The repeated use of the artist's palette is a Brechtian trope to heighten awareness of the artifice of the crafted image. Wyrick and fellow iconoclast Shane hail from the historic town of Charleston, SC. Their experience as outsiders in this fiercely traditional coastal community informed their mutual quest for authenticity through artifice.
